EuroBasket finalists Serbia appeared shorthanded and missing some major stars, like most national teams, in their World Cup Qualifiers opener, but this didn’t prevent them from crushing Austria 85 – 64 in Belgrade.

For head coach Sasa Djordjevic, this victory was significant enough to consider it as one of the most important he has celebrated in his career.

“This was a one the most important wins in my career,” Djordjevic admitted in the post-game press conference. “I was very nervous before the game, but I really wanted to win as this was a new beginning with new faces. I am very thankful to the clubs that allowed their players to come. Especially to Crvena Zvezda.”

Before the game, Vladimir Stimac was honored by the Serbian Federation for his contribution to the national team by receiving a framed jersey.

“Thanks to everyone except Stimac who said he will always be there for us, but he retired,” said Djordjevic. “I’m just joking, Stimac is a great man and we’re we lucky to have him.”
