Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo won’t join the Greek national team for the June-July World Cup Qualifiers games, however, he’s expected to be present in the Second Round matches held in September.

Here’s what Greek national team head coach Thanasis Skourtopoulos said on the matter to Greek radio station Sport-FM.

“We are in contact with Giannis’ representatives. But now is not the right moment for his return [to the national team]. We look at it for September. There is no problem with Giannis and we’re expecting him in September. He should rest to soothe his leg. It has been a very tiring season for him. He ‘ll get ready and will be healthy and prepared in September. And Giannis wants it [playing for the national team] a lot.”

Greece is currently first in Group H with a 4-0 record. They will be placed in Group L for the next round and they are expected to face such squads as Germany, Serbia, and Georgia in a group of six teams that will also include two more teams (most likely Israel and Great Britain) from Group H. The top three teams will advance to the World Cup while the bottom three will play in the EuroBasket qualifiers.
