Aris hands Panathinaikos first domestic defeat

After 16 straight victories in the Greek Basket League, Panathinaikos Aktor got a bitter taste of defeat.

Ergin Ataman’s team lost for the first time in the domestic championship, with Aris taking the victory at OAKA with a final score of 70-73.

Johnathan Stark led the winning side with 14 points, while Vasileios Toliopoulos added 12 with five assists. Ronnie Harrell also finished in double digits with 10 points and five rebounds.

Panathinaikos, which played without Mathias Lessort, Juancho Hernangomez, and Ioannis Papapetrou, had Jerian Grant and Marius Grigonis with 11 points each, while Kostas Antetokounmpo added 10 points. Dinos Mitoglou was on the verge of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds, while Panagiotis Kalaitzakis added nine points as well.

Aris won against the Greens at OAKA for the second time and the first time since January 1997. After an impressive first half, during which they led by +19, with Stark being the standout player, they did not falter when the home team made their comeback.

Panathinaikos surpassed them in the third period, reaching 62-58 with five minutes to go, but the visitors, with a 13-0 run and two three-pointers from Toliopoulos, pulled away to 71-62 with 1:24 left on the clock and secured their significant win.
