The Greek basketball community is mourning the loss of one of its most legendary figures, Vassilis Goumas, who has passed away at the age of 79.
Known by the nickname, The Emperor, he was a towering figure in the sport’s history, leaving an indelible mark as one of the most prolific scorers to ever grace the court. Born in Volos in 1946, his journey in basketball spanned nearly three decades, from 1961 to 1988, taking him from the local courts of Greece to international arenas in South Africa and Ethiopia.
Goumas is most closely associated with Panellinios, where he spent the vast majority of his career and established himself as a scoring machine. His statistical legacy is staggering as he remains the second-highest all-time scorer in the history of the Greek top-tier league, having amassed an incredible 11,030 points. His dominance was validated by four scoring titles in 1970, 1974, 1975, and 1977. Beyond his tenure at Panellinios, he enjoyed a successful six-year stint with AEK, where he lifted the Greek Cup in 1981, before eventually closing his illustrious career at Ilysiakos.
His brilliance was not confined to domestic borders. In 1974, Goumas achieved a rare international honor by being selected for the FIBA European Selection team. Competing alongside global icons like Sergei Belov, Kresimir Cosic, and Dino Meneghin, he represented Greek basketball on a world stage during a series of prestigious games in Italy, Belgium and Brazil. As a vital pillar of the senior national team of Greece with 114 caps, he paved the way for the golden era of Greek basketball that followed.
