Alekos Spanoudakis had died at 91 years of age. Considered one of the pioneers of modern basketball in Greece, he played for the Greek National Team in the 1940’s and the 1950’s and was a member of Olympiacos from 1947 to 1964.
He was the captain of the Reds in their first Greek Championship in 1949. Again with him as the captain, Olympiacos reclaimed the title in 1960. His death coincided with the 94th anniversary from the day his only team in club level was founded.
Olympiacos announcement: “Alekos Spanoudakis chose Olympiacos’ birthday for his big trip. The first and emblematic captain, the man who with his late brother Giannis and the rest of the legends led Olympiacos to its two first Greek Championships and to its first European match passed away at the age of 91.
The void left behind is huge. Alekos won’t be at the first practice of the season in August after decades of being there for the guys, as he called them. He won’t talk to the coach, he won’t discuss about the greatness of the team and won’t wish luck for the new season.
