Current Maccabi Tel Aviv coach Ioannis Sfairopoulos worked with Olympiacos as an assistant (2005-2008) and a head coach (2014-18). He’s familiar with the situation in the Greek League, how Olympiacos does things in general and the moves they made recently which got them relegated to Second Division.

Despite that, Sfairopoulos believes that the owners know what they’re doing: “The only thing I can answer is that the owners of Olympiacos know what they are doing. Believe me, it’s a decision that came after a deep thought”, he told Sport5’s Roi Cohen.

Not only that but he also supports the path Olympiacos took: “Yes, I support it. Look, they have to change the status in Greek basketball, it’s not just between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos, it’s about all the status in Greek basketball. Something more needs to be done, and more than that, I can’t say”, he said.
