Luca Banchi is the new head coach of the Latvian national team, the country’s basketball federation announced. The Italian coach became the 14th coach of Latvia since its independence.

Banchi, 55, signed a contract until the end of the 2023 World Cup that includes a termination option in case the Latvian national team doesn’t qualify to the tournament. He will make his debut this August in the World pre-qualifiers.

In January, Banchi joined the Long Island Nets (Brooklyn’s G-League affiliate) as an assistant. He previously coached such teams as Olimpia Milano, Montepaschi Siena, AEK Athens, Lokomotiv Kuban and Brose Bamberg, among others.

In 2013 and 2014, Banchi won the back-to-back Italian championship titles with Siena (2013) and Milano (2014).
