Since missing the Olympic Games due to elimination in the qualifiers to Italy, the status of the Serbian national team coach Igor Kokoskov has been up in the air and it’s practically certain that someone will replace him at the bench. A few names were rumored and, according to Mozzart Sport, Svetislav Pesic has been in talks with the Serbian Federation.

However, the experienced expert will accept the role only under the condition that he himself chooses who to work with when it comes to the staff and sports director. According to numerous other publications in Serbian media, there’s already a done deal.

Pesic would return to the national team bench after two decades. He coached FR Yugoslavia back in 2000-2002, winning gold at the 2001 EuroBasket as well as the 2002 World Cup. The latter was held in the US and Pesic’s Yugoslavia was the one to beat the hosts 81-78 in the quarterfinals.

Most recently, Pesic was the head coach of Barcelona between 2018 and 2020, during which he won two Spanish Cups.
