Golden State Warriors boss Steve Kerr is expected to become the next head coach of Team USA. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, USA Basketball is finalizing its decision to officially appoint Kerr as the one who will take over the national team and an announcement on the matter is expected soon.

Kerr will be promoted to head coach after being an assistant under Gregg Popovich in the 2019 World Cup and the 2021 Olympics and will have a rather impressive staff with him. Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams and Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra are reported by Wojnarowski to be among Kerr’s assistants, along with longtime Gonzaga head coach Mark Few. Spoelstra had been reported to be one of the candidates for USA’s vacant head coach position.

After the completion of the 2021 Olympic Games and Team USA winning the gold medal, Kerr said that he’d be interested in becoming head coach of the USA national team and succeeding Popovich.

Kerr’s first big challenge will be the 2023 World Cup where Team USA will look to redeem itself in the tournament after finishing at an all-time-low seventh position in the 2019 World Championship. He will also coach the national team in the 2024 Olympics.
