The trend of Greek basketball stars leaving the national team in their early thirties will continue this summer. Nick Calathes implied during Panathinaikos media day on Thursday morning that the summer of 2020 might be his last with the Greek national team and on Thursday afternoon he confirmed it on the official presentation of the Greek league for the upcoming season.

Panathinaikos coach Argiris Pedoulakis first mentioned the possibility during the presentation, and Nick Calathes added: “Yes, I am thinking about retiring. I play for 11 years with the national team. I think that it’s time to give space to the younger generation”.

Born in 1989, Calathes first played with the U20 national team in the 2008 FIBA Europe Championship, and he was part of the Greek national team that won the bronze medal in 2009 Eurobasket.

The Greek national team will compete in the summer of 2020 in one of the four pre-Olympic tournaments for a spot in the Tokyo Olympics.
