Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving suggested to NBA players that they start their own league, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily news. Bondy said that this proposal isn’t “necessarily” related to the NBA planning to resume with a bubble tournament in Orlando.
Irving, who’s also an NBPA (National Basketball Players Association) vice president, has been perhaps the biggest voice against the NBA restarting. He has been reported to think that the resumption of the season would hurt the movement for social justice police and against brutality in light of the murder of George Floyd by a cop, since the games would be distracting everyone from the issue at hand.
Los Angeles wing Avery Bradley has been co-leading Irving’s players coalition. He said to ESPN that: “The actual act of sitting out doesn’t directly fight systemic racism,” Bradley said. “But it does highlight the reality that without black athletes, the NBA wouldn’t be what it is today. The league has a responsibility to our communities in helping to empower us — just as we have made the NBA brand strong.”
