Slowing down might not be in his nature, but Luis Scola intends to retire after the 2020-21 season and participating in the Olympic Games with Argentina for the fifth time. He confirmed the approaching date in an interview with Italian magazine SportWeek released Saturday.

“When will it end? In a year, after the Olympics. Only then I will decide what to do,” he mentioned referring to his playing days, “I could stay involved in basketball, but not as a coach, eventually, only for young players. I’m already receiving plenty of proposals, but none have been just as exciting as the idea of playing”.

Scola, 40, joined Openjobmetis Varese for the current season. A lighter schedule usually featuring one game a week was a decision he made with his family last summer. Beyond more time with loved ones, his masterful showings bring up 23.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 1.1 assists per LBA Serie A game.

“My children and wife did not like me being away from home so much, even making three trips a week” he noted, “It was a situation no longer suiting myself and my family. This was one of the reasons I moved to Varese.”

After a long Tau Ceramica run and 791 NBA games between the Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns, Indiana Pacers, Toronto Raptors, and Brooklyn Nets, Scola competed in China and returned to Europe for Olimpia Milano last season prior to joining Varese.

At the international level, he broke into the senior Argentina squad in 2002. The gold medal in the 2004 Olympic Games stands out among his numerous accomplishments.
