The Japanese government says it will proceed with the organization of the 2021 Olympics, following a report by the Times saying that the games will be canceled.

The Times had reported that Japan has “privately concluded” that Olympics will be canceled due to the COVID-19 crisis , citing as source a senior member of the ruling coalition.

Following the report, the Tokyo 2020 organizers issued the following statement: “”All our delivery partners including the national government, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, the IOC [International Olympic Committee] and the IPC [International Paralympic Committee] are fully focused on hosting the games this summer.”

Australian Olympic Committee CEO Matt Carroll charaterized the cancelation report as “unfounded rumors.”

“The Tokyo Games are on. The flames will be lit on the 23rd of July 2021. This has been just reconfirmed again by the Japanese Prime Minister this afternoon,” Carroll said per multiple reports.
