Greece can be already considered a candidate to host a pre-Olympic tournament in the summer of 2020.

Greek federation president Giorgos Vasilakopoulos talked to the Greek newspaper “Ta Nea” for the national team and the FIBA World Cup. He also confirmed the intention of the federation to apply for one of the tournaments.

“Not only we intend to apply for hosting one of the four tournaments, but we have already calculated the budget of the event, and we will soon start our talks with the Greek state on this matter,” Vasilakopoulos said. “We have proven as a federation that despite the Greek financial crisis, we are still able to host big basketball events that can benefit the country.”

Vasilakopoulos also mentioned that he was not satisfied by the officiating in the crucial game between Greece and the Czech Republic and he also added that he would like to see the FIBA general secretary Andreas Zagklis to be present in the Greek national team games, something that didn’t happen during the FIBA World Cup.
