Estudiantes doctor: Zero risk doesn’t exist; all teams must be tested

Estudiantes doctor and president of the Association of Spanish Basketball Doctors (AEMEB) Juan Jose Perez Toledano analyzed the many conditions that have to be met in order for team practices and the Spanish ACB League to be possibly able to resume.

“We must try to make the return to action as safe as possible, knowing that zero risk doesn’t exist. Nothing will ever be guaranteed 100%,” Toledano warned in an interview with Tirando a Fallar radio show.

ACB has planned a 12-team tournament to be held in July if health measures allow it. The final decision regarding whether the tournament will be held must be taken until May 31.

“In the first stage, you have to know how the players are, those who could’ve had it. From there, determine who can practice but always individually. You can’t do group sessions because the risk of infection would be very high.”

“You have to take extreme measures with the players, coaches, physiotherapists, administrative staff, cleaning staff, security personnel. Not only with people but also with the facilities. Disinfect absolutely everything, the buses in which the teams travel, the hotels, the training courts. The logistics are very complicated,” Toledano added.

While speaking to radio Cope,  Toledano also mentioned that it’s essential for all team personnel to be tested for coronavirus if any competition is to start again.

“If you want the professional teams to return to the competition and training, it is essential to be able to do them [the tests]. We have to know that all the staff of the teams are free of contagion and that there is no problem. So we need these tests to be done.”
