ALBA Berlin uses a solid finish to defeat defending champion Ulm

After trailing by 16 points in the first quarter, ALBA Berlin built up a double-digit advantage and took down easyCredit BBL champion ratiopharm Ulm.

The Albatrosse secured a win, 98-88, in Mercedes-Benz Arena on Sunday. Sterling Brown registered a team-high 19 points as the team coached by Israel Gonzalez leaped to third on the table of Germany’s Regular Season.

Yanni Wetzell, Tim Schneider, and Matt Thomas followed with 14 points apiece. Martin Hermannsson combined 13 points with nine assists. Italian upstart Gabriele Procida sat out alongside injured teammates Ziga Samar (foot), Louis Olinde (head), and Johannes Thiemann (back).

For the visitors, Dominican L.J. Figueroa finished with a game-high 20 points but to no avail. Karim Jallow and Thomas Klepeisz scored 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Highlighting remaining BBL action on Sunday, Chavares Flanigan produced a career-high 30 points powering Rasta Vechta to the win, 109-87, versus MLP Academics Heidelberg. Also, Basketball Lowen Braunschweig defeated Wurzburg Baskets, 100-89.

Bayern takes commanding win over Oldenburg

ALBA Berlin grabbed a big win over Ulm but is still heavily trailing Bayern Munich, as Pablo Laso’s side defeated Oldenburg at home 93-73.

As expected, Bayern had many players entering the scoring sheet, with Sylvain Francisco and Andreas Obst leading the way with 13 points each. Isaac Bonga added 12 with seven rebounds, Niels Giffey had 11, and Carsen Edwards had 10 points.

For Oldenburg, which gave a good fight in the first half, Ebuka Izundu had 15 points with six boards, while Dewayne Russell was on the verge of a double-double with 15 points and nine assists, while Geno Crandall added 13 and Len Schoorman had 10 points.

Chemnitz is still leading at the BBL standings with 16-3, Bayern Munich follows with 14-3, while ALBA is on 11-5…
