The Italian Basketball Federation (FIP) has approved Pallacanestro Brescia’s request to relocate its registered seat from Brescia to Rome, clearing the way for the club to compete in the 2026-27 Serie A season from the Italian capital, subject to fulfilling all licensing requirements.
The decision comes after Maxima Roma was confirmed as one of the 32 participants in the 2026-27 BKT EuroCup. The newly formed Roman project received a one-year EuroCup invitation.
In its official statement, the Federation stressed that the decision was made in cooperation with Lega Basket Serie A and in accordance with existing regulations. While acknowledging the disappointment of the fans, FIP noted that “the feelings of the supporters must always remain central to every sporting activity,” but added that “it is also necessary to respect the choices of every entrepreneur and their legitimate business interests.”
Speaking after the transfer of the club’s sporting rights to the new Maxima Roma project, former Brescia owner Mauro Ferrari defended the decision, pointing to the financial realities behind it.
“Over these ten years we have invested around €30 million. I believe that rationality and economic sustainability are the foundation of any project,” Ferrari said.
“A person responsible for representing a city in sport must understand when it is time to reset. If ten years ago we had €30 million available and today we have just over €500,000, it means the club is no longer sustainable.”
Despite the relocation, Ferrari insisted basketball in Brescia does not have to disappear. He revealed he is ready to work with local authorities to help establish a new club by making available one of the league licenses currently on the market.
“There are two Serie A2 licenses and two Serie B1 licenses available. I am committed to making them available to the municipality so they can be transferred to a new company at a symbolic cost,” Ferrari said. “There is also a serious title sponsor ready to support a fresh start, but time is short. From Monday, we need to sit around the table.”
Ferrari also confirmed that Brescia’s youth academy will remain in place, providing a foundation for basketball in the city despite the departure of its top-flight club.
