Barcelona announced that the club signed guard Leo Westermann to a deal until 2022. The French player is reunited with coach Sarunas Jasikevicius with who he worked with at Zalgiris Kaunas.

Westermann had been registered by Barcelona on EuroLeague’s website and is eligible to play in the upcoming match vs. Valencia Thursday (7/1).

Per Barcelona:

Leo Westermann will join Barça until June 30, 2022. The 28-year-old Frenchman, 1.98m, arrives on a free transfer after agreeing to leave Fenerbahce in Istanbul.

A versatile point guard

Westermann is a tall point guard with a big reach, the ability to lead the team and also to create chances for his team-mates. He also has very good scoring percentages, particularly with the triple, and is excellent at blocking off opponents.

In his career he has played a total of 139 games in the Euroleague – Partizan (14), Limoges (20), Zalgiris (57), CSKA (17), Fenerbahce (31) – with an average of 6.6 points per game and a 39% success rate from the outside the key, with the last two seasons above 45%.

Known to Saras

Westermann has played for Sarunas Jasikevicius before, in the 2016/17 and 2018/19 campaigns. One of his best years in the Euroleague: 8.2 points, 5.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds in 25 minutes per game, came under Saras’ watchful eye. After that great season he signed for CSKA Moscow (2017/18), but the Russian adventure only lasted one season before he returned to Kaunas.

In the last season and a half, 2019/20 and the start of 2020/21, Westermann has played for Fenerbahce Beko in Istanbul.

Finally at Barca

In the summer of 2014 Barça had a preferential right over Westermann, but in the end the Frenchman didn’t join. Now, almost seven years later, it’s become a reality.
