Real Madrid announced that the club parts ways with coach Pablo Laso for “medical reasons exclusively.” Laso, 54, suffered a heart attack during the ACB playoffs.

Laso was hospitalized for two days after the heart attack, returning home but not being allowed to coach the team during the Finals against Barcelona. Now, Real mentions that the club consulted with doctors and cardiology specialists who have all said that there’s “an obvious risk” for Laso’s health if he continues working as the team’s head coach. The announcement also says that any other decision would be “irresponsible” and that the club understands that this has made the Spanish coach “sad” but no one is above health.

This is truly the end of an era for Real Madrid since Laso had been head coach of the team since 2011. Under his leadership, the Spanish powerhouse won the EuroLeague championships of 2015 and 2018, six Spanish ACB championships (2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2022), six Spanish Cups (2012, 2014 – 2017, 2020) and six Spanish SuperCup titles (2012, 2013, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2020).
