Jean Montero’s rapid ascent through European basketball reached a new peak as the Dominican guard claimed both the EuroLeague Rising Star award and a spot on the All-EuroLeague First Team following the 2025-26 Regular Season.
In an exclusive interview with Diario AS, the 22-year-old Valencia sensation addressed the growing speculation regarding his future during a dominant continental campaign where he averaged 13.7 points and 4.6 assists per game. Despite being under contract through 2028, he remains a subject of intense interest for NBA scouts.
When asked if Valencia fans should fear his departure, Montero remained composed. “Whatever happens at the end of the season, I’ll discuss it with my team, my agents, and everyone else. But I’m happy here in Valencia, and I always try to give my best,” he noted.
Having gone undrafted in 2022, the 6-foot-1 guard is open to a move across the Atlantic under the right conditions. “If I have a real opportunity, a chance to play, I think I would go. But if not, no,” said the Santo Domingo native.
Furthermore, he credited much of his development to head coach Pedro Martinez, who has been instrumental in his transition to Europe’s premier competition.
“He’s very important because he’s given me confidence, and that’s what every player wants. He always pushes us to improve every day, and it shows. From the outside, he seems very demanding. But this is a positive thing for the players,” Montero explained.
As Valencia prepares for a best-of-five playoff series against Panathinaikos Aktor, Montero is confident they can overcome the Greek giants to reach the 2026 EuroLeague Final Four Athens, presented by Etihad.
“If you go out there and compete without dwelling on the past, past mistakes, and so on, I believe we can,” he mentioned. “You can beat them not just five times, but six, seven, or even eight times. It’s a team, and anyone can beat anyone in the EuroLeague.”
