ATHENS – The third day of the EuroLeague Head Coaches Board (EHCB) Congress at the Telekom Center featured presentations from Saša Obradović, Andreas Pistiolis, Pablo Laso, and Željko Obradović, who closed the on-court program with his clinic “Preseason Offensive Philosophy” before taking part in the traditional EHCB Workshop.
Beside his appearance at the Congress, Obradović spoke to Nova Sports, reflecting on his return to Panathinaikos and the excitement surrounding the new chapter of his coaching career.
“I came back to a club that I love very much. I came here, spoke with Dimitris Giannakopoulos, and we understood each other. It was an easy decision. I have even more fire inside me to do this job at Panathinaikos,” Obradović said.
The nine-time EuroLeague champion also thanked Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos for making his return possible.
“This is a new opportunity for me and for my career. I thank Dimitris Giannakopoulos for giving me the chance to come back here. I found many people I had worked with before. I’m explaining both the old and the new realities to them. Patience will be important.”
Obradović confirmed that Mike Batiste is expected to join his coaching staff after leaving the NBA.
“Yes, they told me yes. I spoke with him. I’m happy to work with people who love Panathinaikos. We have to show everyone that we are one big family. I believe in that very strongly. That’s my way.”
Asked about his approach to coaching a roster featuring stars such as Kendrick Nunn and Nigel Hayes-Davis, Obradović stressed the importance of communication.
“In every team, the first thing is to pass on your philosophy to the players. You meet with them so everyone understands. I like talking with my players. I will adapt to the needs of Panathinaikos. I want to speak with Nunn, with Juancho, and gradually with everyone.”
Regarding transfer rumors involving Juancho Hernangómez, Cedi Osman, and Jerian Grant, the Serbian coach remained calm.
“It’s summer. It’s normal for rumors to exist. I suppose people have to write something.”
Asked whether Isaac Bonga could once again become one of his players, Obradović remained cryptic.
“Maybe. It’s possible.”
Obradović also addressed the atmosphere surrounding the Greek derby between Panathinaikos and Olympiacos, calling for the focus to remain on basketball.
“I understand the atmosphere. From my side, I will try to focus on basketball. That’s the best message I can send to the fans of both Panathinaikos and Olympiacos. Everyone knows my character. These are games that we should experience and enjoy.”
He also welcomed the prospect of a more competitive Greek league with Aris and PAOK strengthening their projects.
“I think it’s excellent. We all know what Thessaloniki means to basketball. We have to respect everyone. The competition will be stronger, and we have to be ready. It’s good for basketball, and we have to explain to the fans that this is something positive for the game.“
