The foundation of continental basketball in Europe is shifting rapidly, including in Paris.

The NBA is deploying a dual strategy. It pairs global games with regular-season presence in the Old Continent, with plans for a permanent, standalone league. Backed by FIBA, this projected new league is targeted for launch by the start of the 2026–27 season. Lacking an official name, the project is widely referred to as NBA Europe.

The French capital holds a key role in this expansion. In an announcement on Saturday, the City of Paris reaffirmed its total political commitment to the EuroLeague club, Paris Basketball. The local municipal government has directly strengthened the city’s case for hosting a future franchise in NBA Europe. Authorities highlighted the club’s quick rise, strong public support, and economic impact.

This follows major milestones. The club opened the modern Adidas Arena in early 2024. Then, in June 2025, Paris won its first French championship by defeating AS Monaco, after capturing the BKT EuroCup title in 2024. At the top of the 2026–27 EuroLeague Regular Season, the team coached by Max Lefevre sits at 1–2. Backed by the city, they will continue playing at both the Adidas Arena and the Accor Arena.

These local developments align with the vision for a 16-team top-tier league in Europe. Executives face complex talks with Euroleague Basketball shareholders. However, the political and stadium foundation in Paris represents a steady and loyal relationship toward a potential new ecosystem, having established a blueprint for this joint FIBA and NBA project.
