Euroleague Basketball rejects first NBA offer, franchise decisions remain pending

The EuroLeague owners confirmed the decision to expand to 24 teams from the 2027-28 season; however, no final decision has been taken on new franchises during the meeting in Lake Como.

And as expected, the NBA offer was rejected by the EuroLeague, but the door to a possible collaboration is not yet closed.

The wish to get eight new franchises, on top of the 13 current shareholders, remains in place, and a new meeting is expected to be scheduled soon.

The 13 founding clubs will become permanent franchises, but decisions on the remaining spots are still pending.

To be exact, the due diligence on the new bids will be further examined.

It has to be noted that, as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport and confirmed by Eurohoops sources, the NBA offer that was on the table applied to the current number of shareholders.

However, no shareholder was in favor of the proposal made by the NBA.

If a collaboration fails, the NBA is prepared to launch its own 16-team league for the 2027–28 season, widely referred to as NBA Europe. This split could trigger a financial and legal war for the European market.
