Gran Canaria reportedly letting Victor Garcia go and hiring Pedro Martinez

The ten straight defeats in the EuroLeague and the ACB from late January until Sunday’s away win versus Iberostar Tenerife sealed Victor Garcia’s fate. Per La Provincia, Herbalife Gran Canaria executives had already decided to dismiss the 38-year-old Spaniard coach before the ACB Regular Season Round 22 derby. Pedro Martinez will replace him taking over Gran Canaria for the third time following his 2002-05 and 2009-14 tenures.

The owner of the Spanish team approached a deal with Martinez earlier this season before going with the option of the then interim head coach Garcia. In the three months since, the latter couldn’t lead the club safe beyond the Spanish League’s relegation zone and improve its EuroLeague position with the ten straight losses worsening the situation.

The report doesn’t formally shape Garcia’s future, which might allow him to remain at the club with another role. His successor’s main goal, however, will be to avoid the drop to LEB Oro and finished the 2018-19 campaign in the best possible way.
