Pompea Fortitudo Bologna announced on Wednesday that it completed the registration process for the next edition of the Basketball Champions League.

“We are proud to confirm that our club, twelve years after our last time, will return to European club competitions too,” said club president Christian Pavani, “It was among our goals, but we did not believe we could achieve it only one season after being promoted.”

The Italian team holds a successful track record in European club competitions from past decades but was barred from playing in any competition in 2013 due to financial difficulties. Re-founded and starting from Italy’s fourth-tier division made its way back to the LBA Serie A with the shortened 2019-20 season marking its return.

“I must also confess that this is is an emotional moment for me,” added Pavani, “Our path began with plenty of uncertainty seven years ago, but is now enjoying the fruits of our success, which we credit to everybody contributing from the court, behind the desks and in the stands. They never paused their efforts and gave their best to ensure this prestigious return to Europe. This is not our final step. We really want to keep achieving our goals together.”

Fortitudo was eighth in the Italian league’s standings up to the early conclusion of the 2019-20 season, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
