Martinez on Spanish success: Strongest league in Europe but give credit to others

Led by Lenovo Tenerife and Hereda San Pablo Burgos, the Spanish teams have had huge success in the Basketball Champions League over the years and this season just proved the fact.

BAXI Manresa will challenge Tenerife for the title on Sunday, May 8, and coach Pedro Martinez was not thinking about such an outcome early on in the season.

“No, I really didn’t think about this. We tried to compete, go game by game, not thinking about the future but I think we made great competition for us. We are not an experienced club playing in European competitions, unlike Tenerife. For us, it’s a new experience, we’re a humble club and we’re very happy to be here, to have the opportunity to compete against a big team like Tenerife,” he said and affirmed the strength of the Spanish league.

“Yes, that’s true. Everybody knows that, if you talk with foreign players that come to play in ACB, they say that it is the strongest league in Europe. And we are very proud to compete in this competition and be in great shape to play against other teams. But we also have to give credit to other teams like Hapoel Holon and Ludwigsburg,” the coach concluded.

Kyle Wiltjer and coach Txus Vidorreta also agreed that the Spanish League is the strongest in Europe, especially if one looks at it from top to bottom with very strong teams actually fighting to stay out of relegation. Among them, the back-to-back BCL champions San Pablo Burgos.

Meanwhile, Jou Guillem knows that one of the reasons Manresa came so far was the support of the fans that have been impactful in the Final Four as well.

“We know that we have amazing fans, we had great support. Yesterday, we enjoyed together after the game. We are making history and we have to celebrate but tomorrow will be a different game. We know that the support is with us and it will be special tomorrow. It will be fun.”
