Trieste secured an away victory against Szolnoki Olaj, with a score of 87-86, in the third game of the FIBA Basketball Champions League Play-In, thus advancing to the Round of 16 phase.
The duel in Hungary was decided after an incredible drama, befitting a match of such importance. With 14 seconds left and Szolnoki leading 86-85, the visitors called a timeout.
Michele Ruzzier missed a shot, but Jeff Brooks made a putback after an offensive rebound, taking his team further.
Jamhi’us Ramsey was the best on his team with 19 points, Brooks added 14 with seven rebounds, and Francesco Candussi also had 14 points. On the other hand, Adam Somogyi was outstanding with 25 points and ten assists, while Boris Krnjajski added 20.
Trieste was better in Hungary in the first game (82-62), Szolnoki responded in the rematch and forced a third game, but was again defeated in the decider in front of their fans.
The visitors started the match better, and by the beginning of the second quarter, they were close to a double-digit lead (30-21). Szolnoki Olaj managed to reduce the visitors’ lead by halftime and even led at one point, entering the decisive ten minutes with a one-point advantage for the Italians (64-63).
It seemed Trieste would achieve victory more comfortably, as they had a nine-point lead with six minutes to go (78-69). The hosts came back, forced a dramatic finish, but were defeated in the manner described.
In the round of 16, Trieste will play in Group L, alongside La Laguna Tenerife, Dreamland Gran Canaria, and ERA Nymburk.
