BCL Round of 16 Week 5 recap: Three Spanish teams in the Quarterfinals

Eight matches of the fifth round of the Round of 16 in the Basketball Champions League have been played, and ahead of the final round, we know five of the eight Quarterfinal participants.

Even before this round, it was clear that AEK and ALBA had secured advancement from group J, and now three more Spanish clubs have joined them in the next round. Juventut and Unicaja wrapped up group K, while Tenerife earned their ticket to the Quarterfinals in a direct duel against Gran Canaria.

Ahead of the final round, uncertainty remains in group I, where Galatasaray, Rytas, and Le Mans are competing for two spots, while Gran Canaria and Würzburg will decide the second Quarterfinal participant from group L in a direct duel.

Unicaja eliminated Chalon in a direct duel

The round opened in Bulgaria, where Galatasaray defeated Hapoel Holon (87-74), leaving the Israelis still winless.

The most important match of the day was played in France, where Unicaja defeated Chalon (80-70) and eliminated the French team from the race for advancement in a direct duel. At the same time, Joventut, with Jabari Parker making his BCL debut, defeated Würzburg, securing their own advancement while simultaneously eliminating the Germans from the race for advancement.

AEK unbeaten, Tenerife better than Gran Canaria

Five matches were played on Wednesday, and it all started in Athens in a result-wise not so crucial game. Still, on the wings of Frank Bartley, who scored 22 points, AEK defeated Tofas (96-88) and remained the only undefeated team in the Round of 16.

Nymburk defeated Trieste (82-76) later in the program, staying in the race for advancement, while the Italians were eliminated by this loss. Rytas won against Le Mans with 101 points scored (101-81), prolonging the decision on the two teams advancing from group I to the sixth round.

To close the day, ALBA crushed AS Karditsa away (76-71), while Tenerife, with 28 points from Marcelinho Huertas, won against Gran Canaria and advanced to the quarterfinals.
