Argentinian coach Néstor “Che” García has been appointed as the new head coach of Dreamland Gran Canaria until the end of the season, following the departure of Jaka Laković.
Laković leaves the club after 213 games and a EuroCup title, but a disappointing campaign ultimately led to the change, with Gran Canaria sitting near the bottom of the Liga Endesa standings and missing out on the Basketball Champions League quarterfinals.
García arrives as an experienced figure with a long résumé in both club and international basketball. The 60-year-old has coached multiple national teams, including Argentina, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic, winning the FIBA South American Championship and leading Venezuela to a historic AmeriCup title in 2015, which secured Olympic qualification.
At club level, he has won domestic titles in Argentina, Venezuela and Uruguay, along with international trophies such as the South American Club Championship and the Liga de las Américas. He also has previous experience in Spain, having led Fuenlabrada during the 2017–18 season, guiding the team to its best-ever start and a Copa del Rey appearance.
García is expected to arrive on the island on Thursday and be officially presented on Friday, taking charge of the team for the final stretch of the Liga Endesa season as Gran Canaria looks to stabilize its form and climb away from the lower part of the standings.
