SIG Strasbourg has confirmed its return to European competition for the 2026–27 season, with the French club opting to compete in the Basketball Champions League (BCL) as part of its long-term rebuilding strategy.
The announcement comes just one year after a newly appointed leadership group took charge of the club during a challenging period marked by governance instability, financial difficulties, and declining sporting results. At the time, the primary objective was to restore stability, rebuild competitiveness, and secure the club’s long-term future.
Despite operating under financial constraints, including French league salary-cap regulations, Strasbourg assembled a competitive roster focused on collective strength, high-potential players, and sustainable growth.
The club secured a playoff berth during its first season of reconstruction and earned a return to European competition, achievements that club executives described as surpassing the objectives set at the beginning of the project.
Beyond the results, Strasbourg praised the resilience of its squad, which overcame a series of injuries during March and April while continuing to deliver crucial victories at key moments of the season.
SIG Strasbourg revealed that it carefully evaluated two major European competitions: the Basketball Champions League and the EuroCup. While acknowledging that both tournaments are among Europe’s leading club competitions outside the EuroLeague, club officials stressed that the decision was based on strategic fit rather than prestige.
The Basketball Champions League’s format guarantees six games during the group stage, compared to 14 guaranteed games in the EuroCup. Strasbourg believes the lighter schedule provides a more balanced framework for its current stage of development.
According to the club, competing in the EuroCup while maintaining domestic ambitions would require greater financial resources and deeper roster depth than are currently available. As a result, management concluded that combining participation in the French league with the Basketball Champions League represents the optimal balance between sporting ambition, European exposure, and sustainable growth.
