Greek authorities agree that Olympiacos should be part of the league

The Greek Deputy Minister of Sports, Lefteris Avgenakis, met with the President of the Hellenic Basketball Federation, George Vassilakopoulos, on Thursday. The two men agreed that Olympiacos should be part of the Greek Basket League and that a solution must be found to retain the Reds in Greece’s premier competition.

After months of conflicts and appeals, Olympiacos decided to forego the Playoffs of the Greek League forfeiting the best-of-three series versus Panathinaikos OPAP and was ultimately relegated to A2, the second division. The Reds even decided to register a B team in the second division and to exclusively use their senior team in EuroLeague.

The birth of the issue took place last February when Olympiacos walked out of the Greek Cup Semifinal match versus Panathinaikos during halftime protesting of the refereeing. The Reds later announced that will not play any other games against the Greens with Greek referees, which led them to skip the Playoffs series between the arch-rivals.

It is worth noting that the 14th and last spot of the 2019-20 edition of the Greek Basket League remains without a holder. The draw conducted on Tuesday had one side with the name “Team A”.
