Luka Doncic is already on a pretty steady course to become Dirk Nowitzki’s true successor on the Dallas Mavericks. And Nowitzki hopes that the 20-year-old Slovenian point forward will follow on his footsteps not only in regards to reaching greatness but also when it comes to staying with the Mavericks… forever.

“At 20, it has been a lot of fun watching him play. I hope he stays in Dallas his entire career, I hope I can continue having a good time watching him play for a long time,” Nowitzki said during the 2020 Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony held in Berlin, per Mundo Deportivo. The German basketball legend received the “Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award”

“Luka is very young. I hope he’s able to build something and play at a very high level. I hope one day he can bring a championship home,” Nowitzki added. Doncic made his first All-Star game appearance Sunday (16/2).

While receiving his award, Nowitzki credited former teammates Steve Nash and Mike Finley for providing him with some valuable lessons while they were playing together in Dallas.

“I also accept this award not only for what I’ve done on the court but also what I tried to do off the court,” Nowitzki said during his acceptance speech. “I think we athletes have a great platform. And I had some great role models when I got to the NBA. Two of my closest friends to this day are Steve Nash and Michael Finley who were not only great players but also great professionals on and off the floor. They taught me how to be great off the floor. How to care for your community. How to help others.”
