The Houston Rockets and GM Daryl Morey agreed to part ways, per ESPN.

Morey, 48, joined the Rockets as the assistant GM in 2006 and one year later was named GM. He enjoyed successful seasons and inked a five-year contract extension in 2019, but is determined to explore other professional avenues without ruling out a future return.

The report also adds that he approached owner Tilman Fertitta after the conclusion of the 2020-21 season in the Orlando bubble with the idea of leaving. The involved parties since worked through an exit agreement. Morey will remain in an advisory role to assist in the head-coaching search.

The Rockets are planning to promote executive vice president of basketball operations Rafael Stone to cover the GM role. Eli Witus is expected to be promoted to assistant GM.
