Rudy Gobert reportedly turns down Jazz’s extension offer because he wants the supermax

Rudy Gobert turned down an offer by the Utah Jazz to sign the max extension with the team since he wants to get the supermax he’s eligible for, according to ESPN’s Porter Larsen.

As a two-time (2018, 2019) Defensive Player of the Year plus a member of All-NBA teams in 2019 and 2020, and entering his eighth season in the NBA, Gobert is qualified to sign the supermax extension (35% of the team’s salary cap) with Utah. This is what the French center asked the Jazz for, says Larsen, only for the club to answer that they are offering the normal max, which will pay Gobert 30% of the salary cap.

Gobert’s side rejected the offer and now the Jazz and the player have until December 21 to potentially come to an agreement. If that deadline passes with no deal, then the 28-year-old big man will be a free agent next summer.

In November, the Jazz signed their star guard Donovan Mitchell to a five-year, max extension worth up to $195 million.
