Joel Embiid on fight with COVID: I thought I wasn’t going to make it

Not much was known about Joel Embiid’s day-to-day medical status since he contracted the coronavirus but following his return to the court, the player stated that he wasn’t feeling well at all.

“I really thought I wasn’t going to make it. It was that bad. So, I’m just thankful to be sitting here. I’m just glad I got over it.”

That said, for someone with a tough battle against coronavirus, Embiid has made a remarkable comeback. He played a total of 45 minutes in his first game back and scored 42 points while grabbing 14 rebounds in the double-overtime affair against the Wolves.

Coach Doc Rivers also gave him credit: “Joel was phenomenal tonight, but we still lost the game. Give him credit. He’s obviously been working out.”

Despite their court history, his opponent and the matchup Karl-Anthony Towns wished him well too, especially since he’s seen people around him die due to the coronavirus, including close family.

“We’ve had our thing for a while, but this is bigger than basketball. That’s bigger than what we have. I’ve seen it kill people. And I’m glad he’s on the other side.”
