San Antonio Spurs Gregg Popovich was very frank with reporters when he discussed what are his team’s goals for the upcoming season.

“I probably shouldn’t say this,” Popovich joked during the Spurs’ Media Day. “But I’ll say it anyway, what the hell, nobody here should go to Vegas with the thought of betting on us to win that championship.” For information, the odds of the Spurs lifting the 2022 Larry o’ Brien trophy are 1,000/1.

“And I know somebody will say, ‘Gosh, what a Debbie Downer,” Popovich mentioned. “There’s a chance, what if they work really hard?’ It’s probably not going to happen. But that’s not the point. And very honestly, I could care less. You all know what I care about.”

What does Popovich care about? “Develop this group and give them the best possible opportunity to have long NBA careers and to enjoy the hell out of it,” the veteran coach and five-time NBA champion said. “And whoever comes after me will have an opportunity to take them to the next level.”

The Spurs are going into 2022-23 to mainly rebuild following the worst run since 1996-1997. San Antonio finished with a 34 – 48 and missed the playoffs for the third straight year.
