It’s official: Jordi Fernandez has become the third European and the first Spanish coach ever to lead an NBA team, as the Brooklyn Nets announced him as their new head coach.

Following in the footsteps of Serbian tacticians Igor Kokoskov and Darko Rajakovic, Fernandez adds to the list of permanent European head coaches in the league, breaking the barrier for Spain.

Prior to joining the Nets, Fernandez served as an assistant coach under Michael Malone at the Denver Nuggets from 2016 to 2022 before spending the last two years with the Kings.

The Badalona native previously coached the Canadian national team during the 2023 FIBA World Cup, where they secured a bronze medal. His international experience also includes serving as an assistant coach for the senior national team of Spain between 2017 and 2019 and a similar role with the U19 squad in 2013.
