Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic will be signing the max contract extension with the club before he joins the Slovenian national team for the training camp ahead of the EuroBasket, SportKlub reports.
“I expect him to come after August 4, when he has completed all his obligations in the USA,” Slovenia coach Aleksander Sekulic said.
Doncic is expected to sign a four-year, $229 million deal with the Lakers to commit to the club long-term.
While preparing for both the new season and the EuroBasket, with improvements on his body being visible, Doncic has also helped in the Lakers’ efforts to recruit some players that will contribute to the team’s goal of winning the championship.
Earlier in July, the Lakers signed Deandre Ayton with Doncic reportedly having a “key role” in the big man joining the team. Marcus Smart also mentioned that the Slovenian point forward called him multiple times to convince him to become a Laker.
For now, Doncic will be focused on helping Slovenia win its first EuroBasket medal since the 2017 gold.
“When he arrives, I will probably have to stand in line to arrange the last detail,” said Slovenia Sports Director Matej Likar. “Yes, everything is ready. Above all, it is worth emphasizing that Dončić’s playing for the national team was never in question. The coach told you when he will join us. I can only confirm that everything is going according to plan,” Likar is calm about the first star of the national team.”
