Stan Van Gundy says European prospects offer more certainty in NBA Draft debate

As anticipation builds around the next NBA Draft class, a new debate has emerged about the reliability of top prospects and veteran coach and analyst Stan Van Gundy has made his stance clear.

When asked about highly touted American guard Darryn Peterson and his potential to become the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft, Van Gundy shifted the conversation toward a broader evaluation trend: European prospects may offer more certainty at the top of the draft than their American, college-based counterparts.

“You’ve seen Doncic and Wembanyama against grown men playing and seen how they compete,” Van Gundy said. “In college, it’s harder to get a handle on all those intangible things. The top European guys, a lot of times, are a sure thing on picks because they have been tested, they played against grown men. You have seen how they compete”.

Van Gundy pointed specifically to players like Luka Dončić and Victor Wembanyama as prime examples of prospects who entered the NBA with professional experience against seasoned competition. Both players competed in Europe’s top professional leagues before making the jump to the NBA — Dončić starring for Real Madrid in Spain and Wembanyama developing in France’s top division like other French NBA stars like Zaccharie Risacher and Alex.

Van Gundy’s argument centers on the difference in competitive context. Elite European prospects often log significant minutes in professional leagues as teenagers, facing experienced veterans in high-pressure games. By contrast, top American prospects typically spend one season in college basketball competing primarily against peers of similar age.
