As the NBA aggressively accelerates its expansion into the European market, plans are solidifying for a 16-team continental league launched with the strategic support of FIBA. According to recent reports from Sports Business Journal and other major media outlets, Amazon and YouTube have emerged as top candidates to secure global broadcasting rights for the venture. This new top-tier competition, widely referred to as NBA Europe, is currently targeting an inaugural tip-off in October 2027, perfectly aligned with the start of the 2027-28 season.
The league’s structure is designed to maximize commercial impact, featuring 12 permanent franchises anchored in premier media hubs such as London, Paris, Rome, and Berlin. To maintain high competitive stakes, the remaining four spots will be allocated to the finalists of the 2026-27 edition of the Basketball Champions League and winners of season-ending qualifying tournaments. The NBA is already working with financial advisors to monitor ownership bids, with franchise fees expected to reach historic levels as concrete details emerge over the coming months.
Beyond ongoing talks with digital giants like Amazon Prime Video and YouTube, NBC Sports has signaled its intent to deepen its ties with the league. Executive producer Sam Flood recently confirmed interest in extending their ongoing collaboration to potentially include broadcasting NBA Europe games globally.
A critical component of this expansion strategy involves reconciling with the existing EuroLeague structure. The NBA is reportedly exploring various partnership models, ranging from equity exchanges to a full-scale merger, aiming to integrate European powerhouses into this new ecosystem. Leadership hopes that by bringing current basketball giants into the fold, they can create a more cohesive and profitable professional landscape that benefits all stakeholders involved.
