Victor Wembanyama is returning to Nanterre — not as a player, but as an investor.
The French international, who developed at the club between the ages of 10 and 17, confirmed he has acquired a minority ownership stake, describing the move as a natural step tied to both personal history and future ambition.
“I don’t even remember who approached whom first, but it happened naturally. I was born and raised in France. I want to have an impact on French basketball, and at Nanterre because that’s where I feel at home,” Wembanyama said in an interview with L’Équipe, alongside his former coach Frédéric Donnadieu.
Rather than pursuing an immediate large-scale project, the NBA star emphasized patience and gradual development.
“I want to grow with Nanterre and help the club grow,” he said, noting that Donnadieu — who has led the team for decades — carries the broader long-term vision.
Asked why he chose Nanterre over other opportunities, Wembanyama pointed to both emotional ties and potential.
“The main reason is that it’s my club of the heart. I like projects with big room for progression.”
While discussions about future European basketball structures continue across the continent, Wembanyama made clear his focus remains local for now.
“I have long-term ambitions, but they are built over years. I prefer starting by having an influence on one club and one city,” Wembanyama concluded.
