Italian Basketball Federation president Gianni Petrucci has reaffirmed his support of the partnership between the NBA and FIBA, signaling the birth of a new top-tier continental league frequently referred to as NBA Europe. In an interview with Giornale Radio Rai, Petrucci explained how the project is moving from theory to reality, with a formal agreement expected to be signed as early as March.

Central to this expansion is the potential involvement of Italy’s footballing royalty. Petrucci revealed that both AC Milan and Inter Milan are actively exploring the venture, noting that “two real prospects are emerging” and emphasizing the immense brand power these giants would bring to a Milan-based franchise. The vision also involves creating a team in Rome.

“This will bring enthusiasm with two teams like Rome and Milan that will have the NBA acronym, while continuing to play in the Italian championship and making their players available during the windows for the national team, which is a big step forward. So I personally support this project,” explained the 80-year-old executive, relays Sky Sport.

The spotlight remains firmly on Milan’s owner, Gerry Cardinale. The RedBird Capital founder was recently seen in London discussing the project alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic, fueling speculation about his next move. While rumors have circulated regarding Cardinale’s interest in acquiring Olimpia Milano, the FIP president suggested the scope might be even broader. “AC Milan were in London with Cardinale and Ibrahimovic… I know they even spoke on stage. So, this is a fact, not just talk,” Petrucci noted, dismissing skepticism over the timeline.
