In a historic weekend that transcended the NBA world, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr etched his name into Hollywood history before facing the grueling reality of a depleted roster at Madison Square Garden.

On Sunday, the 60-year-old Kerr took home the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film as an executive producer for All the Empty Rooms. Directed by Joshua Seftel, the film offers a poignant look at the impact of gun violence through the preserved bedrooms of victims, a cause deeply personal to Kerr, whose father was a victim of gun violence.

However, the harsh realities of the NBA schedule paired with a 110-107 loss to the New York Knicks. Before tip-off, Kerr reignited the debate over the NBA’s 82-game schedule, advocating for a 10-game reduction. Citing data on increased player speed and a rise in soft-tissue injuries, he expressed a willingness to accept pay cuts to prioritize the health of the players and the quality of the game for fans.

The Warriors’ struggle to maintain a 21-point lead highlighted a roster stretched thin by a wave of absences. Key European contributors were at the center of the rotation shift. Latvian Kristaps Porzingis was sidelined for general illness management during this first leg of a back-to-back. Despite a recent ankle sprain, Dutch center Quinten Post carried the load, posting an NBA-high 22 points, while fellow Dutch starter Malevy Leons added two points.

Turkiye’s Omer Yurtseven made his Warriors debut following a whirlwind week that saw him move from Panathinaikos Aktor to the G League’s Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The 27-year-old center grabbed four rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench. “It’s a huge opportunity,” he noted postgame.

The Knicks relied on their own international core to seal the comeback victory. British starter OG Anunoby provided a steady 14 points, while France’s Mohamed Diawara added three points in a reserve role. Poland’s Jeremy Sochan remained sidelined despite being recently cleared from an illness, Germany’s Ariel Hukporti remained on the bench, and France’s Pacome Dadiet was unavailable following a G League assignment to Westchester.
