Wembanyama one step from awards eligibility amid injury scare

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is listed as doubtful for Wednesday’s clash with the Portland Trail Blazers due to a rib contusion, but there is optimism he will return before the end of the regular season, according to ESPN.

The French phenom suffered the injury after colliding with Paul George during Monday’s win over Philadelphia.

Although initial tests ruled out any serious damage and he is considered day-to-day, Wembanyama logged just 15 minutes and 40 seconds in that game – not enough for it to count toward postseason award eligibility.

As a result, Wembanyama must play at least 20 minutes in one of San Antonio’s remaining three games to meet the criteria for end-of-season honors.

The leading candidate for Defensive Player of the Year and an MVP contender is expected to clear that threshold if he returns in time against either Dallas or Denver later this week.
