After the Miami Heat’s loss to the Toronto Raptors at Scotiabank Arena, rookie guard Kasparas Jakucionis reflected on his transition from FC Barcelona to the NBA. Despite a scoreless 7:32 outing on Thursday, the 20th overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft, presented by State Farm, has become a notable fixture in Erik Spoelstra’s rotation. After starting the season out of the rotation on the G-League team, he has successfully carved out a consistent role, averaging 6.0 points and 2.5 assists over 51 games.
Speaking with Mundo Deportivo’s Toni Canyameras, the Lithuanian combo guard credited his development to his formative years with Barca. “It helped me a lot, both as a person and as a player,” he noted, explaining that the rigorous environment of video analysis and competing ‘against the best in Europe’ prepared him for the next level. When explaining the prestige of his former club to his American teammates, he remains steadfast. “Only the best,” he said. “There, basketball is very important. You try to win everything, every game, because it’s so important.”
Jakucionis also drew parallels between his former coach, Sarunas Jasikevicius, and his current mentor, Erik Spoelstra. “I see similarities. I see that they are leaders, they always want you at 100% for the match, and there’s a strong focus on details,” he observed. While acknowledging that ‘in Europe it’s a little different’ regarding vocal intensity, he appreciates that both coaches look to ‘keep you in your place’.
Although the time difference makes it difficult to follow every game, the Vilnius native continues to monitor Barcelona’s progress. “I still sometimes watch Euroleague games,” he said, adding that he expects them to reach the Playoffs because ‘they always do well when the matches are important’. While his immediate future is in the NBA, he admitted that in the distant future he would like to return to the Catalonia powerhouse, noting, “You never know, but yes, I would like to.”
The Heat are locked into the tenth seed in the Eastern Conference following the defeat in Toronto. To keep their season alive, they must navigate the SoFi Play-In Tournament and win two consecutive elimination games on the road just to secure the final eighth seed on the East bracket of the Playoffs, presented by Google.
