Following the Miami Heat’s exit from the 2026 SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament, veteran forward Simone Fontecchio addressed the challenge of balancing his impending unrestricted free agency with his commitment to the Italian national team.

Fontecchio indicated he likely will not participate in the early July FIBA World Cup 2027 Qualifiers window, noting, “Me being a free agent this summer doesn’t really help with the timing and all that stuff, so I probably won’t do that.”

Despite the conflict, the 30-year-old reaffirmed his dedication to the senior national team of his country, adding, “Definitely want to play for the national team. I know there is another window in late August, and I’m definitely planning on doing that and playing for them.”

With Italy leading Group D and looking toward the next stage, Fontecchio emphasized the need for caution to protect his professional future and physical health during his first experience with unrestricted free agency.

“It’s always special for me playing for the national team, but this summer, I think it’s very important for me being first time unrestricted free agent, all that stuff. And I got to take care of my body too,” he stated.

Addressing his future in the NBA, Fontecchio confirmed his preference to remain with the Heat. European teammates also reflected on the 2025-26 season during their exit interviews, with Lithuania’s Kasparas Jakucionis highlighting a dedication to improvement following his rookie NBA campaign, Serbia’s Nikola Jovic seeking consistency, and Sweden’s Pelle Larsson preparing for his next leap.
