In a record-shattering move for the sports memorabilia market, the alternative asset platform Alt has acquired a 1997 Kobe Bryant Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems (PMG) Green PSA 5 for 3.15 million dollars.
This private transaction marks the highest price ever paid for a standalone Bryant card, eclipsing a previous record of $2.4 million. Despite its PSA 5 grade, the card’s value is driven by its extreme scarcity. While the PMG set is numbered to 100, only the first ten copies feature the green emerald finish.
The acquisition was completed through Alt’s dedicated investment fund, which has aggressively targeted elite assets. “Growing up, the Kobe PMG Green was the card you dreamed about. It was on every collector’s wall, in every price guide, at the top of every wish list,” said Leore Avidar, Founder and CEO of Alt. “Acquiring it for our fund is personal, but it’s also a reflection of where this market has gone.”
This purchase solidifies Alt’s position as a dominant force in the high-end card market, joining a portfolio that includes record-setting items for LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Avidar noted that the transaction reflects a broader shift in the financial landscape, stating, “The best cards in the world are now recognized as serious assets, and we’ve been building the infrastructure to support that belief since day one.”
While the platform continues to amass Hall of Fame-caliber collections, Avidar confirmed a specific strategic focus. “We’ve purposely left out Michael Jordan,” explained Avidar. “It’s really the next generation after Jordan that we’re focused on.”
