Victor Wembanyama opened the Western Conference Finals in spectacular fashion, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 122-115 double-overtime victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on the road.
The French superstar dominated both ends of the floor against back-to-back MVP Shai Gilgeous Alexander, finishing with 41 points and 24 rebounds in one of the most memorable playoff performances of his young career.
Still, Wembanyama was not interested in discussing individual status after the game.
“Do I feel like it right now? I feel tired. But it’s not a question I’m wondering right now. We’ll see, you know. The world is 8 billion people, so it’s 8 billion opinions,” he said when asked whether he considers himself the best player in the world.
Instead, the 22-year-old focused on the collective mentality displayed by the Spurs in a hostile environment.
“The message would be that we as a team are ready to go in any environment, in any place, against anybody. Even though we still got a lot to learn, our effort should be over anybody else’s, and tonight we were relentless,” Wembanyama concluded.
