Former NBA star Pau Gasol elaborated on the projected new top-tier league in Europe, confirming his active involvement and expressing strong confidence that the venture will soon transition from a concept into a reality. “NBA Europe is not just a proposal. I believe it will become a reality,” he stated, per Mundo Deportivo on Tuesday, describing the framework as a ‘necessary’ model to grow the sport at the highest level.
NBA Europe targets an inaugural season launch at the top of the 2027-28 schedule. “It’s a model that will not only be sustainable, which hasn’t been the case in recent years, I don’t know how many, but also a growth model for teams in our sport,” emphasized 45-year-old Gasol.
The initiative is moving forward amid critical negotiations, highlighted by a three-way meeting between the NBA, FIBA, and Euroleague Basketball officials to align the sport’s global leadership. While the appointment of Chus Bueno as EuroLeague CEO has accelerated these discussions, league executives are prepared to advance the tournament format with international investment groups regardless of a full EuroLeague merger.
According to Gasol, the structural overhaul will benefit everything from domestic leagues to youth programs. “The goal is also to have an impact on the entire ecosystem, from NBA Europe to any other European league, domestic league, and also youth programs, federations,” he noted. “The entire ecosystem will benefit from implementing and supporting this model.”
A core component of this strategy involves upgrading infrastructure through the construction of modern sports arenas to elevate the fan experience. However, the two-time NBA champion noted that the ultimate success of the venture will rely on protecting the soul of the local game.
“With this new league, the goal is to elevate and improve the fan experience at a basketball game. I believe we have an opportunity, and it will be crucial to find the right balance between the passion, loyalty, and culture of European sports with the entertainment and quality of a sporting event that this new league will bring,” he mentioned. “I am very excited to be able to be part of this process and ensure that we have the necessary balance so as not to lose what is unique to European sport and its fans.”
