Washington Wizards center Alex Sarr underwent surgery in New York on Monday to repair a fractured right foot, a significant setback for the franchise as it prepares for a pivotal upcoming season.

As noted by the team on Monday, the 21-year-old French big sustained the injury late last week on a contact play during an offseason workout.

Despite the severity of the fracture, the team expects the seven-footer to make a full recovery and return to health in time for the start of the 2026–27 NBA Regular Season.

This physical hurdle follows an injury-plagued sophomore campaign for Sarr, who was limited to just 48 games in the 2025–26 Regular Season. Throughout that stretch, the young center battled a variety of ailments, including toe, adductor, hamstring, calf, and ankle issues. When healthy, however, the second pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, presented by State Farm, demonstrated immense promise on the court, averaging 16.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2.0 blocks in 27.2 minutes per game. His performance built solidly upon a rookie year where he averaged 13.0 points and 1.5 blocks across 67 appearances.

The latest setback effectively rules him out of the upcoming 2027 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers with the French senior national team. It also introduces uncertainty, just as the Washington-based franchise aims to transition out of a difficult rebuild. After winning a total of only 50 games over the past three seasons, the front office aggressively accelerated its timeline last year by trading for superstars Trae Young and Anthony Davis. Sarr remains a central piece of this competitive push.
